One Room Challenge: Week 1

This is one of 124 blog posts published between 2018 and 2021 for the Collected Eclectic blog.

The One Room Challenge is officially upon us!

Twice a year, 20 designers are selected to participate in the challenge as featured designers, and a whole bunch of guests (that’s me!) also join in on the fun of transforming a space during the six weeks.

For this round of the One Room Challenge, we are going to be tackling the reason we bought this house in the first place—the exterior! Truly, the first thing we fell in love with in this house was the curb appeal. Our little bungalow is new construction and mostly builder grade, but the style felt special to us.

We already love the exterior, but we have some ideas to make it our own while adding some vintage character and functionality.

The biggest part of this project will be the paint. We are painting the exterior Valspar Nocturnal Green. We have a very similar color (Valspar Forest Canopy) in our living room and love the deep moody green. The color changes with the time of day and I adore it. The white pieces on our house currently are Sherwin Williams Snowbound, so we will be sticking with that color and doing touchup as needed.

The second big part of the project is laying a brick path and adding a step up to the house. Currently, there is no step or path, so it’s cumbersome to get to the front door. I’m not sure how we’ve put up with this for the past year and a half that we’ve lived here. We are so ready for a clear path to the door. The really fun part of this project will be adding a blue tile house number.

The blue tile is a nod to historic Houston. The blue tile street signs first appeared on the streets of Houston in the early 1920s and served as street markers. We are lucky to have a handful of the signs survived in our neighborhood and want to embrace the tradition!

The rest of the project is in the details! We thrifted an old wood door a few weeks ago and will refinish that to replace our current steel door. The final details will be sprucing up our house numbers and styling with rugs and maybe some new furniture.

I feel optimistic that we will be able to get all of this done in the next couple of weeks, but it’s definitely going to be a challenge! Make sure to check back next week to see what we’ve gotten done and also follow along with everyone else participating in the challenge!
